To Defy the Mirror's Truth
A Descent
(adapted from the original text written in MMXXIV)
She gazed deep within herself and saw its mark—the beast that had eluded her for so many years. She bent her will upon this vestige, and the world around her faded as her inner realm grew more tangible.
She followed the trail of the creature's essence through winding passages and caverns until she reached a mirror—a doorway to its monstrous lair. Gazing into the black, reflecting nothingness, the empty face of the obsidian glass showed her that which her mind feared and longed for all at the same time—she saw herself and the beast as one being. And as its hungry eyes stared back at her, her mind burned feverish, lost within its own darkness.
...And all the while I held her hand. As all else was devoured and her world burned around her, I held on to her hand—guiding her back from the deep.
And I held on, evermore.
A Reflection
Since extremes are seldom in our best interest, there is a delicate balance to guard. On one end of the scales—following your heart, being true to yourself and acknowledging your impulses. On the other—consequence, and the damage our inner voices may wreak upon reality.
But…
Fighting your impulses holds its own risk, the risk of damaging who you are, and your true self.
Thus, this piece stands for the importance of walking a path that lies in the middle—striving for an equilibrium between following your inner compass and staying as close to your truest self as you can, yet while doing so, guarding what we hold most dear in this life from destruction at our own hands.
